In the early 1990s, Jeremy Irons met the most wonderful and amazing woman, Sister Elaine MacInnes, a Catholic nun and Zen master whose mission was to bring healing and rehabilitation to inmates in correctional facilities through meditation and yoga. Jeremy became a patron of her charity, The Prison Phoenix Trust in England, and later became a patron of another charity of Sister Elaine's, Freeing the Human Spirit in Canada.
